Hello! It’s been awhile! I am so sorry that I have been slacking on getting out blog posts. It has been chaotic around the Gill household lately.
We experienced our first bout of the family flu. Our little guy caught the bug a couple weeks ago and preceded to pass it right along to me and daddy. Taking care of a sick child between trips to the restroom is no joke. Watching my poor baby battle this was one of the saddest things I’ve ever had to go through as a parent thus far. Knowing he is in pain and knowing there is absolutely nothing I can do about it made me feel incredibly helpless. It was definitely a humbling lesson in the limits of parenthood.
I’m also back in class! Summer semester recently started and that has really been eating up a lot of my free time. I’m taking extra classes summer and fall semesters so I can graduate in December. I am trying to push through, but it isn’t easy!
And finally, we have been enjoying our summer together! We have been taking vacations and making memories. We went to Ohio to watch my little sister graduate high school. Then we returned to Ohio a couple weeks later to see my best friend from high school get married. And now we are wrapping up a family vacation to the beach!
This beach vacation was our first “real” vacation since having Lincoln. And again, we experienced another humbling lesson in parenthood. We didn’t realize just how difficult a week long trip to the beach with a house full of family would be with an eleven-month old. Boy, was it hard!
But, I am so happy we did it. I think it’s important to share these experiences as a family and create these wonderful memories together – even if Lincoln won’t remember them. Summertime has always held a special place in my heart. It has been the background to some of my most cherished childhood memories and I want it to be that way for our son as well.
This past week we watched as he played in the sand, explored the ocean, and took in a whole new world for the first time. We took him to the aquarium for the first time as well and watched in amazement as he tried to catch the fish and held on tight to our arms as the sharks swam near. He experienced so many new things this week and we got to witness it all.
I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again – exploring the world through my son’s eyes is one of my favorite things. Seeing things the way a child does is nothing short of pure magic.
Some other memories we want to make this summer:
- We want to spend soooo many days by the pool.
- Watch the fireworks on the 4th of July.
- Go on our first hike as a family.
- Maybe a bike ride too.
- A trip to the zoo!
- And celebrate Lincoln turning ONE YEAR OLD!
