Blood Is Thicker Than Water

I do not have the words today. Today was a hard day. My feelings were crushed, my expectations shattered, and my thoughts discounted. My heart hurts.

People always say that “Blood is thicker than water.” Essentially, this means that family ties are more important than any other relationship. I’ve always believed in the meaning behind this phrase. I have always held family in high esteem. I have prioritized family over everything.

But I’m starting to realize that being family is a privilege. It’s not a right. Family relationships need to be nurtured like any other. And when family chooses not to prioritize you, you have every right to stand up for yourself.

The full phrase is actually “The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.” This means that the relationships you choose are more important than the one’s you are given at birth. And I’m starting to see the truth in this all.

Cherish your family. Respect your family. Love your family. But more than anything, cherish yourself, respect yourself, and love yourself. And sometimes that means putting yourself first.
