In honor of Valentine’s Day, I wanted to tell you all the story of my husband and me. I’ve discussed our relationship in passing and if you watch my YouTube videos then you’ve seen him here and there, but I thought now would be a good time to tell you our whole story thus far. This time of year has extra special meaning to us which you’ll soon find out why. So here’s to all the happy couples out there – wishing you a Happy Valentine’s Day from the Gill family!
For those of you who don’t know, my husband’s name is Sean. We met in October of 2011. We met while in military training where we dated for six months. I’m not going to pretend we had this perfect storybook start to our relationship because that wouldn’t be real and I want this to be real. We had a rocky beginning. We started out as friends, but we were attracted to one another. However, we were both dealing with past relationships at the time, trying to figure out how to move on. There was a lot of back and forth at the start of our relationship. It was complicated, it was messy, and it took us a while to get to just us.
But we got there and we were happy. We dated for a while before our training ended and it was time to say goodbye. Neither of us had planned on getting into something serious in training, but neither of us planned on falling in love either. So we made the tough decision to try long-distance. I was headed to Ohio, he was headed to California. We went our separate ways juggling visits over the next six months.
Then, in October of 2012, he came to visit me in Ohio for his birthday. Towards the end of his visit, we went on a walk on some trails through the woods near my apartment. It started to snow and he got down on one knee and proposed to me! It was beautiful. We got so wrapped up in the moment, that when I looked down I realized he had dropped the leash to my puppy and she was nowhere to be seen. We ran off in chase of her and caught her not too far away! It was a funny ending to our romantic moment.
From there, it was a whirlwind! It’s fairly common in the military to have two anniversaries, usually because for some reason you have to get married before you can have your wedding. That is what happened with us. We were soon married on February 15, 2013 at a quick ceremony at our minister’s house with just our parents and siblings present. This is why this time of year is extra special to us.
Shortly after, we had our wedding on April 27, 2013. We had it at the beautiful Simon Kenton Inn and it was a lovely day. After that, we were on the move! We drove across country moving me to California, where we began our lives together.
Now four years later, we’ve moved across country again. We’re celebrating our four year marriage anniversary, expecting our first child together, and are extremely happy after six years together. Here’s to many more!
